Not my picture, but my local FD has a few Excursions. Holy shit, talk about cavernous.
Also, the more you know, they also have a ‘95 Suburban in really shitty shape still in service.

I still kinda want one. Especially one with a current Super Duty front end swap.

Daaaamn, all that and a 6.8 V10 getting -300 mpg!

I hated the way the Excursion drove. I feel like even the Econoline is way more lithe and nimble in traffic. The Suburban and Yukon XL are significantly better vehicles.

Partially learned to drive in one.

Not really, but I drive a large vehicle so my perception is different.

Has anyone ever done a twin 6.8 V10 engined Excursion?
![]() 07/13/2015 at 19:48 |

Old friend of mine’s mother had one. She got in a fight with a 18 wheeler (it was a tie by the way). While the Excursion was in the shop, they got a Suburban loaner. He bitched every day about how small the Suburban was.

NYPD/FDNY have more than a few of these. Why do my tax dollars pay for these things? At most they need Explorers. You would not believe the unnecessary gear these knuckleheads have.

I’d rather my tax dollars go to fueling an Excursion than switching out other vehicles every 50k or so. Cough, crappy Impalas.
Even the Police carry so much unnecessary shit, luckily they’re holding onto their Crown Vics pretty tightly.

All I know is they retain value like a mofo, especially in the 7.3 powerstroke flavor. Also, I’d take one in a heartbeat... for reasons.

Highway on ramp you say? Faster than 40kmh? You couldn’t drag a pen outta my ass with a bulldozer.

Excursion was Ford’s modern day Edsel. At least this one has found an owner that actually needs it.

That’s actually a new Super Duty, custom converted into being a ‘new Excursion’. This company makes them: http://www.customautosbytim.com/

The fire stations by me all run kodiaks/top kicks. . . but then again they do deal with having to haul lots of gear to forest fires.

Even better. Brb robbing a bank

Fair question to be honest. He wasn't big at all. Neither were his parents. I think it had more to do with the interior layout to be honest. They had money, so I would not be surprised if that excursion had captains chairs for the second row. Which will open up a lot of floor space compared to two rows of bench seats.

They’re mainly EMS support and battalion chiefs.

I feel the opposite way. Subukolade XL ESVs feel wobbly and cumbersome, like a bus on old springs. The Excursions, while clearly trucklike, feel nimble enough to drive through a lazy, well-spaced slalom course with a full load of passengers, cargo, and a big-ass boat or trailer in tow. Newer Super Duties with their bigger, power-telescoping mirrors and surround-view cameras make me feel like I could thread a needle with the same loadout.

They’re really not that big. Just over two inches longer than a 2014+ suburban/yukon xl/escalade esv, which is mostly imperceptible.

i believe it was the heaviest production SUV at the time too

They feel bigger for some reason...

Here it is Fusions, Taurii, and the odd Volt as well - and even the crappy Impalas go 300-400K. And there is no excuse for a pig like the Excursion. I’ve driven Expedition/Navigator, and those are ridiculous vehicles. I can only imagine what a larger, truck-based lard bucket is like.
![]() 07/14/2015 at 09:49 |

300-400k? I haven’t even see a successful 100k out of one.

NYC bothers to maintain them.
![]() 07/14/2015 at 11:34 |

Are you sure they even see that kind of mileage? Last time I checked, the NYPD didn’t keep cars long enough to do that.
![]() 07/14/2015 at 12:39 |

Unless a cop I talked to was bullshitting me. I will say this - note that Impalas were never seriously in the taxi fleet. Seeing one was as rare as seeing a Lexus 400h taxi (yes, they exist ). Reasons? Impala never came as a hybrid, and they’re front drive - taxi operators are clinging to the Crown Vic as long as they can because it is dumb technology. Parts remain plentiful and they’re easy to work on. I’ve heard tell of Vics with 800K on them - the most I’ve seen in one I’ve been in was 540K.
The police cars now - lots of Fusions, fewer Chargers, some Taurii, Explorers. A few Volts, but mostly you see those as traffic enforcement or garbage inspectors.

Are Crown Vics still relatively common in NYC? I’d hate to see them go away.
![]() 07/14/2015 at 14:52 |

I want to say they’re still roughly 35-40 percent of the fleet. I’ve been here long enough to remember when they stretched the Crown Vic taxi to give about 6 more inches of legroom. Made a huge difference.
![]() 07/14/2015 at 14:54 |
|
Yup, the LWB ones were super comfy. Glad that they’re keeping them around though.
![]() 07/14/2015 at 15:07 |

Sandy destroyed the last bunch of Crown Vics, and I think the rule is a taxi can’t be more than six years old. If that’s the case, they’ll be gone by ... next year?
![]() 07/14/2015 at 15:14 |
|
Ah, two years for late 2011 models. Probably a few more will stick around after that.
![]() 07/14/2015 at 16:37 |
|
Let me put it this way - when a Crown Vic pulls up I am pleased to get in. When it’s one of those Transit/Courier things, the seats and sometimes the suspensions are collapsed. Horrible. But as I’ve said before in this space - best taxi is the Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Great ride, comfy seats, and built like the proverbial bank vault.
![]() 07/14/2015 at 18:43 |
|
Meh, I'd take a Crown Vic any day over or of those.
![]() 07/14/2015 at 18:51 |
|
Trust me - next time you’re in NYC hail a Highlander. Superb.
![]() 07/14/2015 at 18:59 |
|
Meh, I’ve ridden in a civilian Highlander before. Can’t say the legroom was superb, was there a partition?
![]() 07/14/2015 at 19:02 |
|
Don’t recall on any of them, but if there was, it did not impact legroom. And I am 6 feet tall.
![]() 07/14/2015 at 22:34 |

Because they are 3/4 ton based with solid axles front and rear, so more ground clearance.

It was perfect for big families that liked to go camping.
![]() 07/14/2015 at 22:37 |

That too, haha.
I’ve seen an couple of them being driven by suburban soccer moms. But the majority of them are city/fire/pd owned it seems.
![]() 07/15/2015 at 01:46 |

Well that explains why they sold so poorly.
![]() 07/15/2015 at 09:52 |
|
They sold pretty well...
![]() 07/15/2015 at 10:20 |
|
Nope. They sold poorly. They sold fewer per year than Edsels, and yet the Edsel is considered a HUGE failure. Kind of funny. Heck Chevy sold more Corvairs per year after Nader “killed sales” than Ford sold Excursions even in their best years. Even Yugo sold more cars in the U.S. in their best year than Ford sold Excursions in their best year.
I’m honestly surprised Ford didn’t axe the Excursion sooner. Maybe they tried to keep it alive long enough to get their money back out of the tooling. In any event it did not sell well.

1. Edsel was it’s own brand.
2. For a specialized vehicle, the fact that I see them relatively often says they sold well enough.
